"For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father" (Mt. 16:17). Jesus affirms the truth that not only is Peter's answer accurate, but also that it is God who directs the chosen and called. The consequent appointment of Peter as future head of the Apostles, is a signal by Jesus to the others that the grace of God will empower the leader to guide them in truth. The Feast of the Chair of Peter is a celebration of the trust Jesus has in the power of His Father to use weak instruments to build His Church. Every successive head of the Church, from Peter to Pope Francis, is anointed to listen keenly to the voice of God, and reveal His word and will to all believers. Today, as we pray for our Pope, may we too allow our God to speak to our hearts. Father, may Your Holy Spirit continue to guide and protect Your Church, so that we may all reveal the peace and mercy of Your Son Jesus, who is the Christ and Saviour of the world. Amen
