Holy Week will be celebrated in a little over two weeks’ time. How have we been doing so far with our acts of penance? Our prayer, fasting and almsgiving should be geared toward drawing closer to God. This is why love should be consciously present in our expressions of generosity or sacrifice. Otherwise, we run the risk of becoming agents of legalism and empty spirituality. Today Jesus highlights the truth and beauty of our journey, and what is required to inherit eternal life. He emphasizes that love of God and neighbour must be paramount (Mk. 12:28-34). This is a process and requires intentional focus and patience. Since we are weak and prone to be selfish, Jesus provides the ultimate model of love by dying on the cross. Are we carrying our cross with love? Lord Jesus, teach me how to genuinely love you and others by choosing to die to self, and following You with all my being. Amen.
