Hearing does not mean someone is listening. Listening does not always lead to understanding. We are constantly distracted by our own thoughts, the people and events around us. Our emotions can lead us to being vindictive, distant or indifferent to someone. We see a classic example of this in today's reading. Jesus said to His disciples that their grief at His leaving leaves them so numb, that they did not ask where He was going (Jn. 16:5). Today, pray for the grace to truly listen, so that we may understand and grow. Lord Jesus, help me to silence my distractions and listen to Your voice, so that I may allow Your word to spur my spiritual growth. Amen.
