Today's readings invite us to be generous. Raphael states that giving "saves one from death and expiates every sin" (Tb. 12:9). Jesus reveals that it is from one's substance and not from surplus that makes giving meaningful (Mk. 12:44). Essentially, the true character of our generosity is shaped by how well we love. Where love is absent, there will be a lack of giving which is justified with words that confirm the meanness in the heart. Where love is weak, giving becomes an empty ritual either to appease the conscience or win acclaim. Where love is strong, there is no limit to giving. Love led to the cross (Jn. 3:16). How generous are we? Lord Jesus, help me to truly love so that the generosity of my words and actions will lead to Your glory. Amen.
