The philosopher Socrates once said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." To this idea, believers can appreciate the statement that 'discernment is necessary for the spiritual life'. Discernment is a gift of the Holy Spirit that guides our actions. This gift is one that disciples should include as an intentional petition in prayer. It involves being attentive to the details of the context, wisdom in assessing and responding, and conviction for the way forward. Jesus shows the value of discernment when He said, "Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine" (Mt. 7:6). Discernment imparts peace because it reveals valid signposts. Holy Spirit, fill our lives with Your presence. May the valued gift of discernment teach us how to navigate the waters of life. Amen.
