In biblical numerology, the number 7 depicts perfection. Our Lord makes an interesting reference to this number in today’s reading. He says in Luke 17:4, “Even if they sin against you seven times in a day, and seven times come back to you saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.” According to Jesus, forgiveness is a must, not a choice. It is part and parcel of being a disciple of the Lord. Although it is not easy to forgive, the key to ‘perfect’ forgiveness is stated in the prayer Jesus taught us, “Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.” God’s perfect nature and love for us makes Him ready to always forgive the sinner who repents, and who desires to walk in His ways. We who are recipients of this mercy from God, are graced to forgive others perfectly, just as we are forgiven. Lord Jesus, by Your cross and resurrection, You have set us free from our sins. Help us to reveal Your tender and merciful love by choosing to forgive others and ourselves, as we are forgiven by You. Amen.
Blessings,
