Law and mercy are the two ‘legs’ on which every believer stands and walks. The law keeps us on the path of life. Mercy brings us back when we go astray. The law provides the guide for our choices and actions. Mercy imparts the grace we need for ongoing conversion. Both are given by the Lord so that we may know His love. Under the law, we are convicted. Zechariah and Elizabeth followed the law, and they were bound to it, as being very old, they were childless (Lk. 1:6-7). God then revealed His mercy by granting them a son. This new life through the mercy of God is the reason we celebrate Christmas. The embodiment of mercy is seen in Jesus. Lord Jesus, we thank You for Your love and mercy. May we always show our gratitude by walking in Your ways that lead to eternal life.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
