Today we celebrate Mary as the Mother of the Church. From the cross, Jesus looked and saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved, and said to him, “Behold, your mother” (Jn. 19:26-27). We are all disciples loved by the Lord and are members of His body. Each one of us is given the gift of the Holy Spirit to participate in the saving plan of God. Mary’s role as the Mother of Jesus, now extended to being Mother of the Church, is all due to her yielding to the Holy Spirit in her life. Her “yes” to the Angel invited the Spirit to come upon her, which gave new meaning and purpose to her life. As we ponder Mary’s role and the Spirit in our lives, what direction are we now being led to undertake? Come Holy Spirit, and fill us with Your presence. May the power of Your love so enflame our lives, that like Mary, we too will have the courage to say, “yes” to Your purpose and will in all that we do. Amen.
