‘His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me” are lyrics penned by Civilla Martin. In the gospel, Jesus declares, “You are worth more than many sparrows” (Mt. 10:31). Our true dignity and worth are to be found neither in the value of our assets nor in the opinion of others; not in the contacts on our list nor the popularity or power we may claim. Our worth is linked to fact that we are sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father.
Jesus teaches us how to maintain our faith in our Father, and keep our dignity intact as we navigate the challenges of life. When the crowd walked away from Him because of what He taught, He remained true to His mission (Jn. 6:66). When they judged Him and wanted to stone Him, He moved to a different place (Lk. 4:30). When they lied on Him and killed Him, He forgave them (Lk. 23:34). Jesus knew His worth as the Son of God. Believers who follow the Lord will have similar experiences, in varying degrees, with either being complimented or condemned. We will at times be accepted or rejected. The voices who ‘crown’ us, will also be the same ones who ‘crucify’ us. This is a reality of the spiritual life. But our strength comes from following Jesus who kept His eyes on His Father. We are children of our Father. This makes us worth more than gold. Praise Him!
Lord Jesus, You reveal our true worth by dying and rising for us. May we never lose sight of the inherent dignity that is ours, children made in the image of our Father. Amen
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
