“The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God,” (1 Cor. 1:18). Believers who ‘gaze’ on the crucified Christ will come to understand His power and effective grace in our lives. We can be harsh on others, and even get angry with the weakness we find in ourselves, or the need for help as indicated by others. The reality of sin and imperfection can be overwhelming.
But where sin — and its accompanying hurt, anger, sadness and pain — abounds, the grace of God — that heals, strengthens, comforts and consoles — abounds even more (Rom. 5:20), and brings new life. We worship a God whose delight is to save and restore us in His sight and eternal presence. We need not reside in the darkness of shame and guilt, because His sacrifice, mercy and power will lead us into His marvellous light of love.
Lord Jesus, save us by the power of Your sacrifice on the cross. Teach us how to honestly admit our failures, but even more, to humbly embrace Your saving grace in our daily lives. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
