Are we ready to take the challenge to grow spiritually in this New Year? One indicator of our growth is to measure the ‘standard’ of Jesus with the attitudes and practices of our lives. He not only loved family and friends, but also loved and forgave those who killed Him. He did not seek His own interests and satisfaction, but poured Himself out for the benefit of all. He did not repay evil for evil, but rose above the ‘darkness’ in others to be our light.
Our spiritual growth can be weighed on the words of John the Baptist, “He must increase and I must decrease” (Jn. 3:30). We can easily sink into self-absorption and justify why we say and do the things we manifest. But if these are not aligned to the values of Jesus, then our psychosis only stunts our growth and robs us of peace. Choose to grow by imitating the Lord, and see the difference that comes from allowing Him to increase in our lives.
Lord Jesus, may Your light shine through our darkness so that we will decrease our egos, and allow Your word, Spirit and grace to help us grow in Your favour. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
