It is easy to love someone when the love is ‘felt’ and experienced from the other. We can love God because we ‘feel’ His comforting presence; see His guiding and powerful hand in our lives; and know the warmth of His healing and saving touch.

The above makes loving God and others (Mt. 22:34-40) a happy relationship. But how do we love when we do not experience love from others, or even ponder God’s ‘absence’? We do it because our obedience to God’s commands sets us apart as His people.

In the end, despite reasons and excuses, only love triumphs because God is love.

Loving Father, our true identity and the deepest satisfaction of our authentic selves is revealed when we love You, friend and foe as we are commanded. May the love we show to all people yield joy and peace in our lives, even as it covers our deficiencies and sins. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
