There are times when people experience such a closeness to the Lord that they often make statements which reflect how they feel. One such proclamation actually echoes the words of the Scribes and Pharisees, “If we had lived in the days of our ancestors” (Mt. 23:30), we would not have shouted “Crucify Him” and would have tried to save Him.
There is no reason to doubt the sincerity of these words by Christians. However, what is said in a moment of passion may not necessarily withstand the test of time. We still crucify the Lord today when we choose not to love or forgive others; when we gossip or spread lies, or when we kill with our tongues. In the end, we all need a crucified Christ.
Lord Jesus, it is by Your cross and resurrection that You set us free from our sins. Help us to courageously carry our cross, and choose to walk in Your ways that lead to life. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
