In a moment of crisis, people often make conditional statements that are contractual. “God, if you heal my loved one, I promise to go to Church.” “Lord, if you help me with my exam or get this job, I promise to serve You and live better with everyone.” These are but two of many other cries and promises made to the Lord.
God is loving and desires our well-being. But we need to remember that we do not control God. His ways are higher than our ways. When Simon’s mother-in-law was healed, she showed her gratitude by serving the Lord and His disciples (Lk. 4:39). When the Lord answers our prayers, do we fulfil the promises we may have made to Him?
Loving Father, as You watch over us, You provide, protect and heal us. May we never take Your love, nor the prayers of condition we make to You for granted. Like the mother-in-law of Simon, may we show our gratitude by serving You in the best way we can. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
