Under normal circumstances, it is children who bury their parents. Parents should not have to bury their children. Today’s Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows invites us to enter into the heart of Mary that a “sword has pierced” (Lk. 2:33-35). She had the sorrowful experience of gazing helplessly on her dying son on the cross (Jn. 19:25-27). She would then cradle his dead body in her arms, and eventually part with him in his burial. Her pain was excruciating.
The ‘cost’ of our salvation is expensive. The blood and sweat of Jesus, along with the tears and heartache of Mary, are the priceless ‘payments’ that were made on our behalf. Truly we were bought with a heavy price (1 Cor. 6:20). To every mother or parent who has had to bury your child, the Lord gives the comfort of Mary and His Spirit to accompany you. To every believer who needs inspiration, look to the sacrifice of Mary and Her only Son.
Lord Jesus, You gave Yourself to death on the cross so that we may have eternal life. You gave Mary to John and to us all, as a wonderful Mother and companion on the journey of life. May we never take the ‘price’ of our salvation for granted, but live to please You. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
