I sometimes wonder why Jesus told Mary not to hold on to Him because He has not yet ascended to His Father (Jn. 20:17). After all, should not the Disciple hold on to the Lord for dear life?
The Paschal Mystery affirms the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. But the totality of our faith comprises His ascension, the coming of the Spirit and ending with His return.
While on earth, we share in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus as we rise from sadness or worry. Our faith allows us to experience the ascension as we are with the Lord through the Spirit.
But we all have to wait in patience for the Lord's return as He promised. We believe He is with us, but like Mary, we are not to hold on to a memory, but to the reality of His coming.
It is the hope we exercise in the Lord's return that keeps us 'on our toes' and spurs us to be His witnesses. Living with the anticipation that our Lord is coming, spurs us to tell others the good news.
Lord Jesus, as we wait in joyful hope for Your return, may each day of our lives be spent in loving service for the building of our world and the advancement of Your eternal kingdom. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
