Why would our Lord, the source of peace, tell us that He came “to bring not peace but the sword” (Mt. 10:34)? The Lord carries and gives us the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Eph. 6:17). This word tells us how to live and what God expects of us. We are made to listen to the Lord, but our weakness and selfishness often lead to disobedience.
The sword then can be a source of comfort when we submit to God’s word. The result of this is real peace. But when we rebel against God’s desires, it results in both internal and external conflict. We are restless in our hearts as the sword ‘pierces’ our rebellion. We are at odds with others when love and holiness are not practised. Let the sword win our lives.
Lord Jesus, in You and in Your word we experience real peace. May the sword You carry cut away anything that is not of Your will and purpose, so that we can grow and become the beautiful people You created us to be. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
