Today’s martyrdom of John the Baptist (Mk. 6:17-29) is a stark reminder that the Kingdom of God is built on sacrifice, blood and grace. Believers are called to sacrifice their time, talent and treasure, viewed as a giving of self that is linked to the crucifixion of Jesus.
Authentic witnesses will be martyred, sometimes by the spilling of their blood or having their names destroyed by those who oppose or who cannot control them. But in all things, the grace of our God is more than sufficient to empower us to remain steadfast.
Loving Lord, You give us the grace we need to face and overcome any obstacle, difficulty or battle. Lead us into the victory and eternal celebration that only You can give. Amen.
