Today’s gospel (Lk. 5:33-39) speaks of the reality of fasting. The main intention behind our fasting is twofold: to discipline our various appetites, and to grow in grace and favour with our Lord. There is the need to discern when to fast and from what we fast.
A key aspect of discerning is identifying the people in our lives who motivate us and help us to grow. We ‘feed’ on their positive examples. When people manifest darkness and offer nothing inspiring, from them we fast. Celebrate the joy we have in our God.
Loving Lord, help us to feast on Your word so that we may discern from what and who we need to fast, in order to have real joy and peace. May Your gift of discernment lead us to the ultimate celebration of Your banquet of feasting in heaven. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
