The well-known parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk. 10:25-37) offers three insights that we can ponder. The first is that any chance we can do something good for someone, that is our opportunity to be the face and presence of God for the other. This is even more powerful when we do good to someone who cannot repay us or even shows ingratitude.
The second is to understand that the good we do should not depend on labels (Jew or Samaritan; Friend or Foe) but on the fact that someone in need needs our generous help. The third is to appreciate the fact that doing good is not left to the “Priest or Levite” or to someone else. Each of us is blessed by our good God to be blessings for others.
Whereas there are no limits to being good and doing good, there are limits to observe due to our humanity. Each of us can only be in one place at one time. There are many in need. But we can only attend to one need at time with the limited resources of our schedule, treasure and priorities. Whenever and however, let each of us play our part by doing the good we can.
Loving Lord, You are our good God who provides, heals and cares for us. As we receive, so may we attend to corporal and spiritual needs of those around us. May our example of kinds words, sincere prayer and attentive actions inspire love for You and all. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
