We are told by the Lord to “Strive to enter through the narrow gate” (Lk. 13:24). This helps us to put our life’s experiences into a proper context. It would be ideal if our family, friends and all the other people who we know on the wide road will get to heaven.
But then we begin to realise that this is but a dream. As much as we strive to love people, we cannot force them to change. Too many fall into the habit of only offering hurt; pain; ill will; disharmony, unforgiveness and deliberate practices to destroy others.
We live in a culture that is so steeped in darkness that people no longer recognise the Light and what is good. Their broken lives either advance breaking or destroying others. Who then can be saved? Let each of us ‘work out our own salvation’ by the grace of God.
Loving Father, You call us sons and daughters, and want us to be with You forever. But too many choose to stray and not repent. Too many offer unacceptable sacrifices to You, even as they give unwanted ‘gifts’ to others. As we choose to love and pray for each other, may each of us strive to enter through the narrow gate that leads to eternity with You. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
