Two principles advance our humility before the Lord. “Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather humbly regard others as more important than yourselves” (Phil. 2:3). To perform an act for the sake of doing good without expecting a reward or placing conditions, is to exercise perfect love for the recipient.
Having this pure intention that drives our actions goes against our natural selfish attitude. It gets even more challenging when our Lord tells us to deliberately care for the powerless in our midst (Lk. 14:12-14). If we cultivate true humility and care for the less fortunate, we will begin to see the presence of God in each person.
Loving Lord, You became human to reveal the priceless value of every human being. May Your Spirit help us to strive to be humble in Your sight, and to joyfully care for everyone in need, because every person is wonderfully made in Your image and likeness. Teach us that to serve others, is to serve You who live in them. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
