To choose to follow the Lord is to deliberately ‘get up and walk away’ from a life that keeps us spiritually paralysed, which eventually leads to death. Matthew’s response to the Lord’s call was both actual and symbolic. His experience is a true example for others.
He physically left his post and repented from his sins and corruption (Lk. 5:27-32). We too are called to remove “false accusation, malicious speech and share our bread with those in need” (Is. 58:9-10). This Lent, let us walk closer with the Lord and listen to His word.
Lord Jesus, as You call us to follow You, touch our ears to listen to Your voice, our hearts to be open to Your word, and our feet ready to walk in Your ways. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
